Even before the construction of the building we see today, commerce was already part of life in the island\u2019s downtown area. As early as the 18th century, fishermen, farmers, and small merchants set up stalls near the old waterfront to sell fish, cassava flour, fruit, meat, and other products that supplied the city\u2019s population.<\/p>

The Florian\u00f3polis Public Market as we know it today began to take shape in the late 19th century. The current building was inaugurated on February 5, 1899, initially with only one wing and facing directly toward the sea. At the time, the market was the city\u2019s main supply center: products arriving from the mainland and other regions were sold there to the local population. As the city grew, a second wing was built years later, creating the architectural complex we see today, with the central courtyard connecting both sides.<\/p>

Over time, the market followed the transformations of Florian\u00f3polis. The sea that once stood right in front of it gave way to the land reclamation of South Bay. Commerce changed, and the space also became a meeting and social gathering point for both residents and visitors.<\/p>

One of the most remarkable moments in its recent history happened in 2005, when a major fire completely destroyed the market\u2019s north wing. The event deeply affected the city\u2019s residents, since the place is part of the emotional memory of many generations.<\/p>
